- Jeffrey Zamora: Current situation of Harm Reduction – Alternatives to Smoking in Iberoamerica (Latin America, Spain, and Portugal) – Costa Rica
In this session, led by renowned Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) advocate Konstantinos Farsalinos, three distinguished experts will explore the intersection of public health and THR:
Jeannie Cameron, with over two decades of experience in tobacco control, has been pivotal in shaping policies that aim to reduce the harm caused by smoking. Her expertise in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has made her a key figure in advocating for alternative nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices. Cameron is particularly focused on bridging the gap between industry stakeholders and public health bodies by promoting regulatory frameworks that support harm reduction strategies. Her work emphasizes a shift from punitive measures to pragmatic solutions, encouraging the use of safer nicotine alternatives as an effective tool to combat smoking-related harm.
Muazu Elazeh, a prominent figure in Nigerian media, combines media leadership with public health advocacy. His work reflects a strong commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue on critical social issues, including THR, governance, and sustainable development. Elazeh has been recognized for his efforts in public health reporting, notably receiving the Health Reporter of the Year award from Save The Children International in 2013. His advocacy focuses on raising awareness about the health benefits of alternative nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices, and promoting strategies to reduce harm from smoking.
Jeffrey Zamora, a key advocate for THR in Latin America, draws on his personal success in quitting smoking through vaping to drive his advocacy efforts. As President of ARDT Iberoamerica, he works to raise awareness of safer nicotine products and promote fair regulations that can help reduce smoking-related health risks. His work focuses on countering misinformation and pushing for the adoption of proportionate regulations for low-risk nicotine products across the Ibero-American region.
These experts will offer invaluable insights into how Tobacco Harm Reduction strategies can play a crucial role in improving global public health outcomes.
